Movie Star Homes:
The Famous to the Forgotten
(Santa Monica Press 2004)

Growing up near Los Angeles, I knew that the great actors of the silent and early-“talkie” films lived throughout the Hollywood area, but I didn’t know exactly where until 2002. That’s when I noticed a listing for silent-film star Lillian Gish in a 1918 Los Angeles City Directory. After I unearthed a few more addresses, Mike Oldham, a fellow student of old Hollywood, pointed out what I hadn’t considered: This should be a book.

Palm Springs in
Vintage Postcards
(Arcadia Publishing 2005)

This book was inspired by Mike Oldham’s collection of historic postcards showing the desert homes of iconic movie stars like Gloria Swanson. Palm Springs had been a prime get-away for Hollywood stars during the 1930s through the 1960s. The book also features postcards showing the city’s historic hotels, restaurants and shops.

Do you ever find yourself with too many writing projects and a shortage of reliable writers? I can help.
Who am I?
Platform shoes were hot and laptops were not when I earned my first dollar as a writer. I spent a year working as a newsroom assistant at KFWB radio in Los Angeles where my duties included writing weather headlines. Eventually, I longed for more words and less smog so I headed for Newport Beach. I grudgingly took a job in public relations, a field I had always associated with hucksters wearing white shoes.
As I executed public relations campaigns for companies like Van de Kamp’s Frozen Foods and McCulloch Corporation, I had two revelations: 1. White-shoed hucksters were hard to come by, and 2. I thrived on the varied writing projects. News releases, pitch letters, marketing newsletters, feature articles, fact sheets—I loved it all.
So I left.
I chucked the health plans and other appealing benefits of full-time employment to become an independent writer. For the last 18 years, I have written hundreds of articles for media outlets such as The Chicago Tribune and Computerworld Magazine. I have also written and edited articles, reports and newsletters for Deloitte & Touche, Mazda Motor Corporation and other companies. And, I am the co-author of two books: “Movie Star Homes: The Famous to the Forgotten” and “Palm Springs in Vintage Postcards.”
The next time you need a reliable writer, please call me at 949/644-1606 or send me an e-mail at judy@judyartunian.com. I would love to pitch in and help you get the job done.
